I believe that it depends what you are doing with the liquid inside the glass. If you are filling it up, it is half full. (Eg topping up your drink) If you are emptying it, it is half empty. (Eg drinking it) That's realism for you.

So my friend was mad at me because we were splitting a soda and when I drank the bottle he was mad that I didn't let him have any. I thought it was obvious that my half was on the bottom.
